Drink Up! http://www.idealnutrition.ca/2010/07/08/drink-up/ http://www.idealnutrition.ca/2010/07/08/drink-up/#comments Thu, 08 Jul 2010 15:22:52 +0000 catharine http://www.idealnutrition.ca/?p=425 Try drinking some delicious purple coloured juices this summer, instead of red wine.  Mix the juice with some bubbly water for a refreshing and healthy drink.  Consumption of purple and blue fruits has been associated with lowered risk of metabolic syndrome, a risk factor for heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes.  Try the following juices: Acai berry – lowers bad cholesterol; Wild Blueberry - very high in antioxidants that help improve memory and help fight aging, cancer and heart disease; Pomegranate – a heart healthy juice high in Vitamin C, A and E and contains antioxidants that may help prevent cholesterol build up in arteries; Cranberry juice - may help promote healthy cholesterol levels and prevent cancer.

MICROWAVED FOOD http://www.idealnutrition.ca/2010/02/10/microwaved-food/ http://www.idealnutrition.ca/2010/02/10/microwaved-food/#comments Thu, 11 Feb 2010 00:57:24 +0000 linda http://www.idealnutrition.ca/?p=346 Microwaving your food destroys enzymes, depleting the life energy, just because it is cooking it.  But it gets worse.  The Russians who have done the most diligent research on microwave ovens and their biological effects on food and humans, outlawed their use.  In their research, foods that were exposed to microwave energy increased in cancer-causing effects and decreased in nutritional value.  Vitamins and minerals were made useless in every food tested, and the bioavailability of nutrients, including B vitamins, vitamin C and E, and essential minerals, decreased.  Meat proteins were rendered worthless.  Microwaving also interfered with the digestibility of fruits and vegetables.   Microwaving also makes all food acid-forming.

Beets http://www.idealnutrition.ca/2010/01/13/beets/ http://www.idealnutrition.ca/2010/01/13/beets/#comments Wed, 13 Jan 2010 21:01:32 +0000 catharine http://www.idealnutrition.ca/?p=321 If you are feeling that you overindulged over the holidays and want to give your liver and gallbladder a break try this Cleanse.  It is an excellent way to thin and move the bile. It also aids in WEIGHT LOSS and relieves digestive discomfort by improving assimilation of fats and improving gallbladder function.  Fresh healthy bunch of beetroot

BEET RECIPE

1 Large ORGANIC beet, washed and finely grated
the  juice of 1/2 a lemon
2 tablespoons flax seed oil

TO CLEANSE:

Take one teaspoon of mixture every hour throughout the day.

On day TWO and THREE make a fresh batch using 1/4 of a beet

Take one teaspoon of mixture 3 times a day.

FOR MAINTENANCE:

Make this mixture to add to your salads frequently or eat alone as above 2 to 3 times a week.

This will keep the bile thin and moving. Note: if you cannot get organic beets, be sure to peel them. Otherwise, use the peel as well.

Beets in any form are an excellent food for both the liver and gallbladder.  Eat your regular meals throughout this period, striving to eat lots of fresh vegetables, good fats and to avoid refined sugars and processed foods.

DID YOU KNOW?

  • Beets contain powerful compounds that help protect against heart disease, birth defects and certain cancers, especially colon cancer.
  • Beets contain: Folate, manganese and potassium and a good source of fiber, vit C, iron, magnesium, copper and phosphorus.
  • The greens attached to the beet root are delicious and can be prepared like spinach or swiss chard. They are incredibly nutritious and concentrated in vitamins and minerals as well as carotenoids.
  • Choose small or medium sixed beets whose roots are firm, smooth skinned and deep in colour. Store unwashed in fridge after cutting majority of greens off, leave about 2 inches to prevent roots from “bleeding”.
  • Beets can be cooked or eaten raw. Only cook them lightly. Peel them after they are cooked.
  • Try roasting them with other root vegetables. Or wrap cut up beets in foil and add olive oil, garlic and salt and pepper and roast for about one hour – Delicious!!

PMS tips http://www.idealnutrition.ca/2009/09/10/pms-tips/ http://www.idealnutrition.ca/2009/09/10/pms-tips/#comments Thu, 10 Sep 2009 17:29:50 +0000 catharine http://ideal.dev-10.net/?p=244 1. Boost your intake of inflammation-soothing omega oils by eating oily fish, such as fresh tuna, salmon, herrings, mackerel, and sardines, as often as you can, and incorporating seeds and nuts into your diet.

2. Eat little and often.  The best snacks to nibble on between meals include fresh fruits, nuts, toasted seeds, and small tubs of yogurt.

3. Avoid salty foods, which aggravate fluid retention, and also overly sweet foods,  If the urge to comfort yourself with a dose of chocolate is overwhelming, carrying a small bottle of vanilla essence around with you and having a sniff whenever the craving hits really helps to satisfy your chocolate lust, without saddling your body with excess calories.

4. Reduce your consumption of alcohol and caffeine-containing drinks, better still, cut them out altogether.
