January 19, 2011Linda and Catharine of Ideal Nutrition are pleased to announce that Valerie McNicol, BSc, RHN, is joining their practice as a consultant. Valerie graduated from the Canadian School of Natural Nutrition as a Registered Holistic Nutritionist (RHN) with a Certificate of Merit and is a member of CAHN-Pro (Canadian Association of Holistic Nutritionists). She has always been interested in food and health, particularly Intuitive Eating as it relates to obtaining and maintaining optimal body weight and will be offering her expertise in this area.

Choosing Organic
July 22, 2010It may not always be possible to buy organic produce but here are 12 foods that have been identified with the highest pesticide residues. We recommend always buying these foods organic:
1. Celery
2. Peaches
3. Strawberries
4. Apples
5. Blueberries
6. Nectarines
7. Bell Peppers
8. Spinach
9. Kale
10. Cherries
11. Potatoes
12. Grapes (imported)
And remember to choose local produce over imported all the time!!

Drink Up!
July 8, 2010Try drinking some delicious purple coloured juices this summer, instead of red wine. Mix the juice with some bubbly water for a refreshing and healthy drink. Consumption of purple and blue fruits has been associated with lowered risk of metabolic syndrome, a risk factor for heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes. Try the following juices: Acai berry – lowers bad cholesterol; Wild Blueberry - very high in antioxidants that help improve memory and help fight aging, cancer and heart disease; Pomegranate – a heart healthy juice high in Vitamin C, A and E and contains antioxidants that may help prevent cholesterol build up in arteries; Cranberry juice - may help promote healthy cholesterol levels and prevent cancer.

MICROWAVED FOOD
February 10, 2010Microwaving your food destroys enzymes, depleting the life energy, just because it is cooking it. But it gets worse. The Russians who have done the most diligent research on microwave ovens and their biological effects on food and humans, outlawed their use. In their research, foods that were exposed to microwave energy increased in cancer-causing effects and decreased in nutritional value. Vitamins and minerals were made useless in every food tested, and the bioavailability of nutrients, including B vitamins, vitamin C and E, and essential minerals, decreased. Meat proteins were rendered worthless. Microwaving also interfered with the digestibility of fruits and vegetables. Microwaving also makes all food acid-forming.
